Baby Name Generator

Making a tool to increase organic growth

Time Frame: 6.2024—6.2024
Client: Chatbooks
My Role: UX/UI Design
Collaborated with: PM, Developers, Marketers, and Graphic designers

Problem Statement

Acquiring new customers is expensive! How can we attract new customers at a lower price?

One day at Chatbooks our SEO specialist noticed that many people in our demographic search for baby names. This seemed like a perfect opportunity to make a tool that could help lead expecting parents to Chatbooks.

Goals

Make a tool that would:

  1. Help expecting parents explore baby names

  2. Lead expecting parents to a Chatbooks purchase

Research

The idea with this project was to move fast and make something we could test quickly. I completed competitive analyses for other baby name generators. I sent out a few surveys to find out what parents cared about most when naming their children.

  • Including the nicknames of a name could be important because many parents mentioned that one of their biggest considerations was if the name would be made fun of.

  • Generators that asked for the last name made it easier to visualize a first name recommendation.

  • Parents would want to specify the name’s gender, and sometimes the first letter of the name.

Learnings

Baby name generator design proccess

Initially, I aimed to make a very functional and easy-to-use baby name generator. I wanted to get parents a list of names without having to fill in too much information, yet give them plenty of customization Here are my first designs:

V1 | Baby name generator mapping

V1 | Baby name generator

  • This design allows a person to get a list of names after just one question. It also has interesting information about each name, and lots of filters you can use to customize your results

  • This design rely’s on tabs to get to the different parts of the generator. From previous user testing I know that Chatbooks users have a hard time discovering features hidden behind tabs.

Also this design could be more entertaining. How could it stand out from other baby name generators?

After a design review of this design with me, the product manager, and the developer we clarified that this name generator was first and foremost about having fun. If we could create a generator that was fun to use, we hypothesized that more people would be likely to use and share it.

V2 | Baby name generator

  • This design rely’s on tabs to get to the different parts of the generator. From previous user testing I know that Chatbooks users have a hard time discovering features hidden behind tabs.

Also this design could be more entertaining. How could it stand out from other baby name generators?

  • I took notes from those catchy and somewhat addicting personality tests, and added an element of that here.

I also made the quiz more subjective, allowing the parent to day dream about the personality the aspirations of their child

Lastly, I went into more detail on the name that is generated for you initially, rather than making the user tap see this detailed view.

  • We still needed to brand this to marketing liking. My next step was o work with a graphic designer to make sure this design matched the look and feel of their website.

I also needed to make sure we had desktop designs as well

This design also has a dead end: once you generate a name the only options is to keep generating names. We needed to add a share element so users could share this with their partners and other people in their social circles.

Final Design

I worked with a graphic designer to get our company’s branding on my design. We also added content from our marketing team to lead a person using the generator to buy a baby book.

Outcomes

A month after launch we hit page 1 with the baby name generator (in GREAT company with The Bump in position one and ranking with other brands like Pampers)
